Summary:
As of 12:00am on 4/30/2008 a 5GB limit will be placed on all Personal (P:) drive network storage locations. Any users currently over that limit will be contacted individually to make appropriate storage arrangements.
What this means to you:
If you reach the 5GB limit and attempt to save additional data to your (P:) drive, your request will be rejected, you will receive an error message, and the data will not be saved. After the date indicated above, users who exceed 4GB of storage in their (P:) drive will receive a warning message via email that they are approaching the limit and should take corrective action to reduce the amount of network storage space they are utilizing.
Why:
An increasing amount of personal data (MP3s, Pictures, etc..) is being stored on the campus network in individuals (P:) drives, causing a strain on both our data storage and backup systems as well as reducing the amount of storage space available for official college data.
Also:
I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that ITS suggests you keep the amount of data in your P: drive below 1GB and that all network storage (P:, R:, S:, T:) is to be used to store business related files only, not personal (music, movies, photos, etc..) files. If you have data storage needs that exceed this limit, please contact the Helpdesk so we may assist in making appropriate storage arrangements.
Suggestions
Finding out how much data is in your (P:) drive now:
Windows users:
1) Right-click on your My Documents folder
2) Select Properties from the resulting menu
3) Select the General tab in the resulting window
4) Look at the Size: value (NOT Size on Disk:). Note that it may take several minutes for the system to detect all your files.
Macintosh Users:
1) Open Finder
2) Navigate to the Macintosh HD > Hillsdale File Shares > AFP > Faculty & Staff > Users > (username) folder.
3) Select File > Get Info from the toolbar.
4) Look at the Size: value. Note that it may take several minutes for the system to detect all your files.
Recycle Bin:
Many of your deleted files are stored in the Recycle bin on your (P:) drive. By regularly emptying your Recycle Bin you can recover additional storage space.
Personal Data:
If you have personal files (music, movies, photos, etc..) that you would like to have available to you on campus, please store them on the local (C:) drive of your computer. While information stored on the (C:) drive will not be backed up, or be available from the network, it does provide ample storage space for your own personal files. ITS is happy to provide assistance with this task, please contact the Helpdesk to request assistance.
If you have a personal device:
A number of personal devices (iPods, Smart Phones, etc..) by default store their information in the My Documents folder on the computer they are connected to, which is the same location as the (P:) drive. Please redirect your device’s storage location to a location of your choosing on your local (C:) drive before the date indicated above. ITS is happy to provide assistance with this task as well, please contact the Helpdesk to request assistance.
